The Muay Thai Fighter

Jurriaan has been participating in quite a number of our shoots, and it’s about time we let him speak and keep our promise to show more of the Muay Thai series Bas took.

The setting: A basement, where Jurriaan trains on a regualar basis, with Bas behind the camera during a one-man and model production.

The background: An email asking jurriaan to share his views on this specific shoot.

Jurriaan’s words, translated:

This photoshoot started out as an experiment for Bas. Bas said he could probably take a few nice images of me working out during my regular and that it would be a kind of “dress rehearsal” for a future shoot.

Although I’ve been involved in several Corepics shoots before, it continuously surprises me, how much time and effort actually is involved in such a shoot. Even though my regular training schedule remained the same to what I’m used to, sometimes it required a bit more time for Bas to get the “right” shot. Another difference is the shorts I’m wearing. During this shoot, I’m wearing an official Muay Thai shorts, whereas normally, I would wear ordinary sports shorts. Still, I believe the choice for the shorts I’m wearing for this shoot make the shoot more worthwhile.

During the shoot, I regularly took a short break to get a sneak preview of the images Bas took. Foremost, this provided me with some very useful feedback on the technical side of my skills, which needs to be fine-tuned on certain aspects.

Apparently, Bas took a few very good images, which I find impressive, considering Bas produced this shoot all by himself. Personally, I’m happy to see myself modelling in those photos.

De fotoshoot was eigenlijk een experiment van Bas. Hij zei dat hij waarschijnlijk wel een paar mooie plaatjes kon schieten van een van mijn trainingen en de shoot was een soort van generale repetitie.

Het verbaast mij iedere keer weer hoeveel erbij zo’n shoot komt kijken, te bedenken dat ik het al eerder mee heb gedaan. Mijn training bleef redelijk hetzelfde, af en toe was ik wat langer bezig met oefeningen als Bas nog niet de “juiste” foto had genomen. Een ander verschil is het broekje; op de shoot draag ik een officieel muay thai broek, normaliter is dit een gewone sportbroek. Toch denk ik dat de keuze van deze sportbroek de shoot wel ten goede komt.

Ik nam vaak even een korte pauze om een aantal foto’s te bekijken. Dit was vooral leerzaam, omdat ik een goed beeld kreeg van mijn techniek (die op sommige puntjes kennelijk nog iets mag worden aangepast).

Het schijnt zo te zijn dat Bas een aantal zeer goede foto’s geschoten heeft wat ik erg knap vind gezien het feit dat hij alles alleen heeft gedaan. Voor mij is het dan leuk dat ik op die foto’s sta.

What I like most about this series, is that Jurriaan’s expressions shows how much he’s dedicated to his training, barely stepping out of his true self. In that sense, it might be as real as it gets for stock. The dedication he exhibits during his training was – apparently – difficult to interrupt, yet the setting and theme really cry out for more – we’ll gladly organise a similar, if not bigger martial arts shoot!
